In order to earn points you must be a member of an RRCA running club and you must be a member of the Arkansas Grand Prix. Cost to join the Grand Prix series is $15.00 per year. Even if you only run a few races each year, joining the Grand Prix can help your club. For clubs to earn points in a race, there has to be a minimum of 3 females and 4 males racing. The top 3 females and top 4 males from each club will contribute to the club points. If the minimum number of male or females are not present, the club will score 0 points in that category. Speed is not a requirement, sometimes just being one of the runners that shows up may help contribute to your team.
Each runner will also earn individual points in their respective age group based on where they placed against the other runners in their age group. For example in a non championship race, 1st place in each age group will be awarded 20 points. 2nd place 18, 3rd 16 and on down. If you are last place you will still get a minimum of 1 point. Championship races will score a few more points and awards go 5 deep in each age group. 1st will get 30 points, 2nd 27 points, and on down to the 1 point minimum. Showing up for every race can earn you a lot of points over the season so its not always about speed.
For those that want to be the ultimate Grand Prix runner there is what they call "Ironman". To become a Grand Prix Ironman you have to finish every single race of the season. Not an easy task but there have been several Cruisers that have done it.
One other thing to note, this years Spring Fling 5k will be an Arkansas Grand Prix Championship race. This means more points and 5 deep age group awards.
